Ski Club. A Friday afternoon in February. TGIF, but this
could be the beginning of a cold, dreary weekend. NOT for the SHA Ski Club! We
jump into the school van and enjoy the ride to any of
several night skiing mountains in northern Connecticut. Some of our members belong
to racing teams; others are just learning how to ski. But we all have a great time
and arrive back at school around 11 PM. Having the flexibility to take one of these
trips on short notice makes me glad to be part of SHA.
Community Service. Each of us gives at least twenty
hours a year to outside service projects. In addition, last year we began having a
service day, for which each student chose between several projects, including cleaning up
Cummings Beach, hosting a Bingo party for senior citizens and visiting a local nursing
home. We also collected food for the hungry at Thanksgiving and sang carols at St.
Camillus before Christmas. Why? Because helping others is what life is about.
Father-Daughter Dance. The couples who start
practicing now will be contenders in next March's dance contest. That's just one of
the features of this annual event, which reminds fathers and father figures that
"Daddy's litle girl" is growing up fast.
Talent Showcase. First, the sellout crowd enjoys a pasta
supper. Then the lights go down and the entire student body shows their talents in
one way or another. We have singers, dancers and musicians. Between the major
acts, well, "It's Time For A...Comedy Quickie!" We have comedians, skit
writers and actors. It's a great celebration of our diversity, our God-given
talents and SHA's belief that every one of us has something special to contribute.
Retreat. Should high school
years be so busy that we never have time to THINK? To PRAY? Each SHA class
attends a separate one-day retreat in the beginning of every school year. Under the
guidance of a professional director and with the help of my classmates, the retreat
experience makes me stop and think about my life. Why am I here? How am I
doing? Where am I going? What does my life have to do with God and other
people? It's a very important day for every one of us.
Student
Council Dances. When SHA students host a dance, we do it together and we ensure
the safety and enjoyment of our guests, as well as the protection of SHA's property and
reputation. Our dances are always well attended by students from other local and
regional schools, such as Fairfield Prep.
