| A school dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus naturally radiates the love of God
throughout the larger community.
This page permitted our students to share some of the creative and rewarding work they
performed for others in satisfaction of their annual service commitment.
The SHA Community enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at many different tables, most of them
surrounded by family members. During the days before the holiday, we celebrated it
together by gathering several carloads of food to ensure that many of our neighbors would
have a better Thanksgiving dinner with their families. As Stamford resident Gene
Wilder has said, in connection with his efforts on behalf of the city's homeless and
hungry, Stamford is small enough that we really can make a difference
here.
In recent school years, a group of Academians devoted their Monday afternoons to
simply "being with" the residents of St. Camillus. It must
have been a mutually
rewarding experience, because our girls couldn't wait to go back each week.
Beauty is more than skin deep.
Several of our students grew their hair long, not out
of vanity, but with the aim of donating 8-13" to
Locks of Love, which
promised to weave it into wigs for financially disadvantaged victims of
alopecia areata and other long-term medical hair losses.
Need exists throughout the year. The students pictured
below made monthly collections for a food bank. They
distributed flyers and posted signs, offering to pick up food
and paper goods on the first Saturday of every month.
Perhaps you can do the same in your neighborhood.

Academians helped host an annual Christmas party for local children at the Yerwood
Center. During a recent Advent season, about thirty of our students made a special trip to St. Camillus to sing Christmas carols to the
appreciative residents.
| During Lent, all members of the SHA Community were invited to participate
in a weekly mass in the SHA chapel. Our Freshmen sponsored a Toiletries Drive for
Pacific House, a shelter for homeless men in Stamford. Each homeroom was assigned a
specific type of product. Students were encouraged to use their own money and do
their own shopping in support of this drive. Becoming a woman who makes a
difference...takes practice. |
The SHA Environmental Club regularly coordinated beach cleanup projects
in Stamford. Other SHA students participated in home restoration projects sponsored
by AmeriCares every May.
But, in the life of each student, that is only the beginning of the story...
Why are we here? Community service is one of the ways in which we answer that
question.
