Varsity and JV
Volleyball
Coach:
Mr. Thomas C. Harris
The unique aspect of
volleyball is that most of our students had never played it
competitively before. The same was true in other
schools. It was a great opportunity for anyone who had
the will, aptitude and commitment to become a
volleyball champ. |
Varsity
Cross Country
Coach: Ms. Natasha Webber
Cross country was our most
individual sport. Although you practiced with a team,
encouraged your teammates and ran in the company of athletes from
many other schools, you were really competing against your own
limitations. How well you did was completely up to you.

Varsity
Soccer
Coach:
Mr. Anthony Telesco
The soccer team was
reactivated in 2000 and placed third in the FAA in its first
season. In addition to team achievements, this team's
new history was colored by individual triumphs. We
saw that every afternoon in our running and calisthenics.
Our soccer players had heart. |
Membership on an interscholastic sports
team required a substantial commitment.
Our teams
practiced, played or met after school every day during their
seasons, and 100% attendance and effort was expected.
|
|
Varsity Tennis
Coach: Ms. Webber & Ms. Sessa
The tennis team practiced every afternoon
at our home courts in Scalzi Park. Thanks to Stamford and
the USTA, they were upgraded to Deco II Turf courts in 2005.
Our girls competed against some of the best tennis players in
Fairfield and Westchester. |
Varsity Softball
Coach: Mr. Thomas Harris
Our softball team was
undefeated a couple of years ago, and SHA was the best
represented school on the local All-Star Team that competed
in that summer's world series in North Carolina. Win
or lose, the atmosphere at Kelly Field was that of our
national pastime.

|
Basketball
Until 2003, JV and Varsity
Basketball were two of our most active teams. As our
students and their interests changed, we sometimes
deactivated one sport and started another.
Accordingly, basketball was sidelined for the Academy's last
few years. |
|
Ice Hockey, Rowing, Diving,
Skiing, Sailing, etc.
They say, "Stamford is a
softball town" and "Stamford is a
hockey town." The truth is that Stamford, like many towns
in Fairfield County, is blessed with great opportunities for
girls to play their choice of sports. It's fun and
healthy. It also teaches a priceless lesson when they
break through traditional barriers and personal limitations to
succeed as team members and athletes in their own right.
Just ask Genna Henock, who played as a wing on the Stamford Spinnakers
Girls High School Ice Hockey Team during her first year at SHA. |
